New York County Defender Services
Senior Trial Attorney
New York City
Thalia Karny is a Senior Trial Attorney at New York County Defender Services, a public defender organization representing clients in Manhattan. Before joining NYCDS in 2018, she practiced in the Bronx, in the Criminal Defense Practice of The Legal Aid Society as a staff attorney for eighteen years. Prior to working as a public defender for over two decades, Thalia worked in Los Angeles in the film and music publishing industry and was co-founder of a social media start-up focused on providing users a way to communicate anonymously. Thalia believes that advocating in the courtroom is not the only way public defenders can help their clients. Creating awareness and informing the public about how the criminal justice system fails our most needy is critical work that every public defender should engage in. A graduate of New York University and The Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Thalia is also an accomplished violinist and studied at the Juilliard School. She lives in Montclair, NJ.
