Joanne Loeak

Joanne Loeak was born and raised in Majuro, which is the capital of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Joanne migrated to Hawaii in 1996 for schooling and to seek better opportunities for her family. She joined the Hawaii Immigrant Justice Center at the Legal Aid Society in 2014. She spends more than half of her time outside the office in the community at outreach events providing general information about Legal Aid’s services for victims of domestic violence. Joanne works collaboratively with other service providers. In the Marshallese community, Joanne is a community navigator and is very active in Micronesian and Marshallese empowerment groups, including the Marshallese Education Day committee (MED), Micronesian Women United (MU), Compact of Free Association, Community Advocacy Network (COFA Can), and Micronesian Health Advisory Coalition (MHAC). During her tenure at Legal Aid, Joanne has developed culturally competent workshops for Marshallese and Micronesian women that address domestic violence.
