Emily Ponder Williams is the Managing Attorney of Civil Defense Practice at the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem, where she has also served as a staff attorney and supervising attorney. At NDS, Emily supervises and provides defensive and affirmative representation for residents of Upper Manhattan facing a variety of civil legal issues arising from contact with the criminal justice and family court systems, including immigration, housing, employment, civil forfeiture, police misconduct, and re-entry matters through collaboration across practices. Emily is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law. Upon graduation, Emily was a Fellow in the Civil Action Practice at the Bronx Defenders before joining NDS. She also serves as a member of the New York City Bar Association Mass Incarceration Task Force and the New York State Bar Association Committee on Legal Aid and is involved in numerous coalitions across New York City focused on promoting re-entry and reducing criminal justice-related barriers.
