Presenters from the Right to Counsel National Campaign (R2C) will build on last year’s session where we discussed the findings from the public opinion research, American Views on the Right to Counsel and Public Defense, and how defenders and advocates can use the findings to advocate for public defense. In this session, we will also present on the findings from the system actor roundtables and the accompanying communications toolkit (to be released in the summer of 2018), the roles these other system actors play in ensuring the Sixth Amendment right to counsel, and persuasive messages to gain system actor champions. During this session we will explore what this means for defenders; how defenders can use this information to champion the importance of public defense; and how defenders can collaborate with other system actors to gain support for effective public defense systems and to ensure the Sixth Amendment right to counsel.
