Civil legal aid for veterans has become a top priority for the American Bar Association, local and statewide bar associations, and a growing number of law school clinics around the country. Legal aid providers have found funding support for this work in many places, including as partners within the VA’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families grant and through medical/legal partnerships organized at VA medical centers. And yet, the role of lawyers remains controversial, with some nonprofits preferring not to use attorneys when their veteran clients need help, even when legal protections are being ignored. This session will showcase local Houston collaborations and national developments that can help participants deliver best practices in their community and increase funding to support that work.
