Building quality public defense systems is a struggle. Nowhere is this more true than in rural areas. Faced with few attorneys, little funding, and geographic obstacles, states and counties must often innovate to meet Gideon’s promise in regions with low populations. In Building Rural Defense, policy leaders from indigent defense commissions in four states—Utah, Idaho, Michigan, and Texas—will discuss how they have grappled with the policies and practicalities behind providing the right to counsel in rural areas.
