Mentoring in Public Defense

The panel will discuss the history and future of public defense mentoring in Texas, beginning with the creation of the Future Appointed Counsel Training Program (FACT) in the Harris County Public Defender’s Office in 2012 and its expansion into a statewide program funded and overseen by the Texas Indigent Defense Commission and the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association in 2018. The program sends lawyers with less than three years’ practice to Gideon’s Promise, a nationally recognized public defense training program, and then pairs the lawyers with seasoned criminal defense lawyers in their legal community back in Texas. FACT was recognized as an exceptional defense program by the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants.
