The computers are coming! Technological "modernization" of state and federal agencies--including algorithm-based decision-making, software systems overhauls, and internet-based client portals--can provide new and transformative technologies that improve the lives of our clients. But these projects can also go horribly wrong. Human communication and access to information is cut. Benefits are narrowed or denied. Data and predictive analytics wrongly identify our clients as fraudulent actors in the system. As advocates, we are learning to identify these projects, involve our clients and their voices in the development phase, and then respond with multi-dimensional advocacy strategies when technology harms vulnerable populations. Come join us and learn how you can work for, and against, these new technological advances.
