The Civil Caucus will include a brief update on the current environment and issues in the civil legal aid community, followed by a dynamic panel discussion on the use of technology – both within civil legal aid and in systems that touch clients. The increasing use of Artificial Intelligence, algorithms, and automation has created multiple touchpoints in the delivery of civil legal aid. Technology can go a long way in facilitating the delivery of civil legal aid to those who are most in need of assistance. But the use of AI, algorithms, and other types of automation also presents a number of challenges to advocates in civil legal aid. Leaders in civil legal aid and experts in the use of technology will guide the discussion and lead attendees as we evaluate: What technology is being used and how? What does this mean for how advocates approach the work? What questions do we need to be asking? How do we best prepare and engage with clients to address the practical impact of an increasingly automated world? What does this mean for the future of the delivery of legal services?
